In Memoriam: Dr. Izthak Brook (1941–2025)
It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Dr. Izthak Brook, MD, MSC, on 10 January 2025. A distinguished physician, researcher, and advocate for the laryngectomee community, Dr. Brook leaves behind a lasting legacy that continues to benefit those navigating life after laryngectomy.
Dr. Brook was a highly respected expert in infectious diseases and a professor of pediatrics at Georgetown University. However, for laryngectomees worldwide, he was best known as the author of The Laryngectomee Guide, an invaluable resource that has empowered countless individuals facing the challenges of living without a voice box. His expanded edition of the Guide provided comprehensive insights into medical, emotional, and practical aspects of post-laryngectomy life, offering guidance on topics such as communication, airway care, and coping with daily activities.
After undergoing a total laryngectomy himself due to throat cancer, Dr. Brook dedicated much of his later years to educating and supporting fellow laryngectomees. His first-hand experiences, combined with his medical expertise, made him a uniquely compassionate and authoritative voice. Through lectures, articles, and personal outreach, he helped demystify the journey of rehabilitation and adaptation.
Beyond his contributions to the laryngectomee community, Dr. Brook was widely recognized for his work in infectious disease research and military medicine. His extensive publications and scientific contributions have had a lasting impact on both medical fields.
Dr. Brook’s dedication, wisdom, and kindness will be profoundly missed, but his work continues to guide and inspire. His Laryngectomee Guide remains an essential reference for patients, caregivers, and medical professionals worldwide.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and all who have benefited from his knowledge and generosity. His legacy lives on in the voices of those he helped regain their confidence and independence.
