Supporting laryngectomees through shared experience and specialised care

Meeting laryngectomees at our bi-monthly social gatherings is both rewarding and motivating. These get-togethers create a space to share stories, exchange ideas, and connect with others who understand the day-to-day realities of life after laryngectomy. Yet there are times when the support of a trained professional can help make sense of more complex feelings and challenges.

At our November meeting, we welcomed Simon van der Stap, Mental Health Clinician and Counsellor with Head and Neck Cancer Australia (HANCA). Simon noted that while he regularly supports people affected by head and neck cancers, he was keen to deepen his understanding of the laryngectomee community. By attending the session, listening to personal experiences, and engaging in open conversation, he gained valuable insight into the unique issues faced by our members.

Simon also outlined the support available through HANCA. The service offers free and confidential counselling for anyone affected by head and neck cancer—patients, partners, families, and carers. Support is available by phone, live webchat, or email.

If you need guidance or someone to talk to, contact 1300 424 848 or visit the HANCA support page.
